Research Questions

  1. How does tutoring from an AI differ from classic human tutoring methods?

** Responses are paraphrased **

  1. Response 1: AI tutor is useful for students that need immediate help that is accessible 24/7. Since AI has no office or working hours, it can provide help when you are working on an assignment at 8 AM to 3 AM. When asking the right questions it can help me get to the answer that I need or if I am super lost know the right answer. On the downside, when the AI is not sure if something is correct, it will not say “I am not sure but this is how I would approach it” like a human would. The AI says their answers confidently, like they are correct.

  2. Response 2: I think that the classic human tutoring is the best and only way to learn because humans are more emotionally intelligent than AI. When I am getting frustrated on a problem, having another person slow down and help me with the problem is far better for learning than an AI. The AI goes through the analytical steps that it knows, but won’t explain more into each of those steps. It is also frustrating when I am trying to get help with a problem and the AI just gives me the answer. Of course this method is easy to get homework done, but it doesn’t help me learn the content.

  3. Response 3: I think that both AI and human tutoring has its benefits. While AI like ChatGPT gives a very data-driven approach about the information that is given, I like tutoring from a person better because it allows me to be more creative with my thought processes and responses. While for calculus I like using AI because it gives me the steps that I need to solve a problem, for writing class, I would rather talk my ideas out with a person and not a computer.

  1. How has the teacher’s and professor’s grading been affected by the use of AI-graders and tools, in relation to the feedback to the students?

** Responses are paraphrased **

  1. Response 1: As a student, I feel that the grading system using AI is a very quick and easy process for professors. In one of my classes, I am able to get my results minutes after submitting my homework. I feel that the AI gives me little to no feedback about the content of my work and how I can fix it. I feel that I get no feedback on an assignment, I just get the grade back

  2. Response 2: I really like that professors use AI to grade exams that are multiple choice because then I get my exam grade back relatively fast. I like the idea of knowing what my grade is for a multiple choice exam instead of having to wait a week for the professor to grade all of the other students' exams.

  3. Response 3: I don’t like the use of AI in grading assignments, especially in writing assignments. Whenever AI is used to grade a writing assignment, I feel that I am not getting enough valuable feedback to grow as a writer. I also believe that AI says that I plagiarize articles, when I have cited and quoted them properly and should not be docked points.

  1. How does social media (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) affect communication between people in formal and informal interactions?

** Responses are paraphrased **

  1. Response 1: I think that social media has impacted me a lot in formal writing. Since social media and texting is very fast-paced, it has made me struggle with writing professionally. When I am texting, I use a lot of emojis and abbreviations that help me convey a message. But when I have to write in a professional setting, like an email, I struggle to find the words and sentences that should be in the email.

  2. Response 2: I think that social media has allowed me to express myself in more ways than just words. On my TikTok, I make videos that show my personality through dancing videos and silly get-ready-with-me. When I write a professional email or have to write an essay for a writing class, I don’t feel that my funny personality carries throughout that writing without being informal.

  3. Response 3: It is hard to tell what should and should not be formal on social media. Since a lot of companies have moved to social media like LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc., it is hard to know if every post that you make should be office professional. There is a level to having funny TikTok's that are not inappropriate, but they may not be considered for a professional business setting, making it hard to know what is appropriate or not to be on social media.

Reflection:

When I introduced these questions to my friends and other people, I noticed that a lot more people liked to talk about the first question about tutoring in AI versus humans tutoring and the last question on how social media has affected communication professionally. I think that the engagement was usually a few sentences from most people, but more people engaged with AI tutoring. I believe that many people have a lot to say about tutoring with AI because it is a very controversial topic. Since it is so easy to get answers and cheat with AI, the idea that it can be a good tutoring resource can be doubtful to some people (brought up in Response 2). Response 1 and Response 2 do like the data driven approach that AI can give students. They also brought up the idea that if AI is used correctly, it can be a powerful resource for students to use by forcing the AI to walk through the steps of the problem instead of giving the answer.

One interesting point is that when asking about social media affecting professional communication, there was a point brought up that businesses have moved to social media, where it is typically used for funny videos. While LinkedIn has always been a professional social media, the company Duolingo is on TikTok and makes, what can be considered, unprofessional videos. This can lead to confusion to new employers on what the standard for that company is.
